To begin the preparation, after weigh-in, the next step -- drugs!
These drugs, Ketaset and Diazepam, are combined in a cocktail, according to puppy weight, for induction of anesthesia. Anesthesia will be maintained by inhaling gases.

... and the IV injection... |
After the IV is given, two injections are given -- one for pain relief (torbugesic) , and the other an antibiotic. |
With that, these boys are in dream-land... |
... if only for a moment...
Next comes the prepping for their air-tube --
The insertion of Elmo's tube in to his trachea... |
... and what it's hooked up to - Isoflurane --
-- "a halogenated volatile anaesthetic which induces and maintains general
anaesthesia by depression of the central nervous system and resultant loss of
consciousness."
Next, the surgical area is shaved... |
Next, the pup is taken to the preparation area, where the surgical area is scrubbed.
Note the isoflurane tube already at work, maintaining anesthesia.
Here, Smidge is washed-up... |
While he downs another breath of anesthesia! |
... and is then taken to the surgery room... |
